Definition
CAC payback is the time it takes for a new customer's margin to cover what it cost to acquire them. Shorter payback means cash comes back sooner.
CAC payback = CAC / monthly contribution margin per customerExample with made-up numbers: Acquisition costs 30 per customer and each customer brings 10 in margin per month. Payback = 30 / 10 = 3 months.
How to use it
It is a cash question, not a profit question. A business can have a healthy lifetime value and still run out of cash if payback takes too long.
Use margin rather than revenue, and state the cohort and the period you measured.
