Three permission levels for AI assistants in ad accounts

Giving an assistant access is not one decision. It is three, and each one needs its own conditions.

Level 1: read

  • The assistant looks at spend, results and settings and explains them.
  • Good for: weekly summaries, finding anomalies, answering questions about a report.
  • Require: access limited to the clients that need it.

Level 2: draft

  • The assistant writes a change as a proposal. Nothing is sent.
  • Good for: budget shifts, new ad variants, pause suggestions, with the reason attached.
  • Require: a preview of the exact object and values.

Level 3: apply

  • The assistant sends an approved change.
  • Require: a named approver, an idempotency key, a read-back and a log entry.
  • Cap budget moves per change and per day, and start new ads paused.

Moving up

  • Move up only for a reason you can write down, and move down after any incident.
The MCP permissions guide turns these levels into roles and a quarterly review.
