Budget pacing for ecommerce ad accounts

A budget can fail in two directions: it runs out on the 20th, or a third of it is left on the 30th. Pacing is how you notice early.

The basic calculation

  • Divide the monthly budget by the days in the month to get the even daily target.
  • Compare spend to date with the even target to date. The ratio is the pace.
  • Forecast the month by projecting the recent average daily spend over the days left.

Why even is not always right

  • Sales events, paydays and seasons justify uneven days. Write the plan down before the month starts.
  • Platforms can underspend a budget on slow days and catch up later. Check what the platform actually does.

A simple rule

  • Within 10 percent of plan: leave it alone.
  • Outside it: find the reason before moving a budget. Ask whether it is a limit, an audience, a rejected ad or a real drop in demand.

Change safely

  • Propose the change with the reason and the forecast, get approval, apply it and read it back.
  • Log the change, so the report can explain a break in the series.
