A post mortem template for creative tests

A test that is not written up gets repeated a year later by someone who was never told it had already failed.

Five lines per test

  • What was tested: the hypothesis and the one thing that changed.
  • What happened: the metric for control and variants, over the agreed days, with the spend.
  • Verdict: win, loss or not enough data, using the rule written in the brief.
  • What we learned: one sentence that could apply to another client in the same category.
  • What next: the next test, or a reason to stop testing this idea.

Made-up example

Hypothesis: a question in the first line keeps more people watching. Result: hook rate 31 percent against 24 percent for the control after 7 days and equal spend. Verdict: win. Next: test the same opening with a different offer.

Where it lives

  • Next to the creative IDs, so anyone opening the ad can find its history.
  • In the client report as one line, not one page.
