Creative fatigue signals and what to do about them

Fatigue rarely shows up as one big drop. It shows up as several small signals that move together.

The signals to watch

  • Frequency rises while reach stops growing.
  • Hook rate falls, which means fewer people stay past the opening.
  • Cost per result rises for the same audience and budget.
  • Comments and reactions turn negative or stop.

How to check without fooling yourself

  • Compare the same ad over the same number of days, not one day against a week.
  • Look at two signals before you decide. One moving number is often noise.
  • Note changes that were not about the ad: budget, audience, season or a site change.

Thresholds

Set your own thresholds per client and write them down. A number that is a warning for one store is normal for another. Revisit them after each creative review.

What to do

  • Prepare the replacement before the old ad is paused, so spend is not left without a candidate.
  • Change one thing at a time, such as the hook, so the result teaches you something.
  • Record the result against a creative ID, so the learning outlives the ad.
